DEATH VALLEY NP: California

Another long awaited and much studied adventure. We hit it just right: Spring Break, 2009. Not too hot, perfect weather, a brilliant variety of sights and environments, light traffic, great company!

'The Racetrack' and its moving rock mystery...

Wildrose Charcoal Kilns: Built in 1877 to produce fuel for the surrounding silver mines. They still smell smokey inside!

PETROGLYPHS & PICTOGRAPHS

Arches NP, UT

Death Valley National Park: Titus Canyon

GLEN CANYON: Lake Powell, Escalante, Utah

I collected maps, 'Backpacker Magazines', read blogs, and studied maps for 2 years waiting for this trip!!! A great friend joined in the adventure after seeing my passion, and it was a hike of a lifetime! We hiked into (and out of) different branches of Glen Canyon 4 times in 5 days! From sandy descents to rope clinging ascents, it was worth every second!

From Amazing canyon rim views, curving slot canyons of brilliant color, desert wildlife and wildflowers, to secluded slot canyons I cannot possibly summarize it ALL in a short time!!! Again, I say, the trip of a lifetime!!!

Day 1 &2: Coyote Gulch
Day 3: Willow Gulch
Day 4: Peek-a-Boo & Spooky Canyons
Day 5: Bryce Canyon
Sure! It's 'MY' passion, but wading through knee deep, ice cold crystal clear water, orange swirling perfectly smooth sandstone walls rising 200 feet on both sides... words cannot describe!

MT. BORAH: Idaho's highest peak, Lost River Range

If you seek a challenge, this is it! Climbing a verticle mile will get you to the top of the state. It is a strenuous hike/climb that was not as eerie as the blogs and comments that I read through prior to making this trip. If you are in good health and good physical condition, this is a great day hike that WILL take you all day. (Unless, of course, you hang with the guru who ran past us on our way up, only slowing long enough to answer that it only takes him 2 hours to summit instead of the average 5 or 7.)

...just dont look down! (Chicken-Out Ridge)

...take your time! (Final stretch, last 800 vert. ft.)

...and pack enough food and WATER!!!
(Summit!)

SUMMARY:
It took the 2 of us about 8 hrs to summit, and about 5 hrs to hike back on Aug 14, 2008. Jordan, age 10, was congratulated by all who we saw on the trail and given a standing ovation as he poked his weary head over the summit! Packing plenty of water is always the key!
I also made this same climb the previous year with 5 other adult friends. Elevation sickness kept one from reaching the summit, but the rest of us pushed on.
I would do it again!
